About This Spot

Stepping into Chinatown Inn feels like coming home to a well-loved neighborhood treasure. Nestled on Third Avenue in Pittsburgh’s bustling Chinatown district, this spot carries a genuine warmth that extends beyond its cozy walls. The pace here is unhurried but lively, where friendly faces—both behind the counter and among regulars—lend the space a comforting familiarity that invites you to settle in and stay a while.

The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual and thoughtful, wrapped in subtle nods to traditional Chinese aesthetics without ever feeling staged or overly formal. It’s the kind of place where locals return time after time, drawn by a sense of belonging as much as the enticing aromas wafting from the kitchen. Whether you’re unwinding over a pot of hot tea or sharing plates with friends, there’s an ease to the experience that feels refreshingly authentic.

The menu unfolds like a quiet conversation with the soul of Sichuan and Cantonese home cooking. Spicy dishes carry a boldness that isn’t forced but thoughtfully layered, while delicate touches appear in classics like perfectly seasoned egg drop soup or the crisp comfort of Chinatown egg rolls. Vegetarian options here are more than an afterthought, with cleverly balanced flavors and hearty textures, ensuring everyone can find something thoughtfully prepared.

This is a place where the food feels like part of the community’s story—not just a meal to be consumed. The attentive staff tend to longtime guests with genuine recognition, creating a rhythm that feels personal rather than procedural. It's a space that celebrates the everyday joys of sharing good food, simple pleasures, and moments that linger long after the last bite.

I tried the Sichuan chicken and it was packed with bold flavor and just the right amount of heat when ordered extra spicy. The prices are very reasonable and the sake was smooth with a generous pour. Definitely a place worth coming back to!

A real cool place, so glad we decided to try. This place was awesome from the onset and the food was wonderful. Probably the best egg drop soup I’ve ever had, everything was on point and a great place to eat lunch or dinner. Lots of vegetarian options as well.

So it's American Chinese takeout style food. But it's quite good for what it is. Food is fresh with big portions and low prices, especially for downtown. Spring rolls are awesome obviously. Horseradish sauce is great too. Lastly this is a freaking piece of history, it's like stepping into a 50s time capsule in a good way. Highly recommend eating in.
